SCANSM is a low cost, effective method to verify checks at the point-of-sale (POS) and improve collections of returned checks. On a daily basis, members contribute information about returned checks to us. We then merge all of this information and provide a daily file update of returned check activity to our membership. The member uses this information to verify whether to accept or decline check writers at the point-of-sale.
SCAN provides you with basic protection against bad check writers through a file of known bad check writers. This prevents you from accepting a check from a consumer who currently has an unpaid returned check owed to any member of the SCAN network. SCAN also provides referral value to the member who contributes the check to the network. Referral value occurs when a consumer is turned down at one retailer because of a bad check that is owed to another retailer. That consumer is referred to the retailer to whom they wrote the bad check and they must pay that check to get off the network and have their check writing privileges restored.
SCAN OnLineSM is a robust check authorization solution that enables you to use state-of-the-art analytics and data to authorize checks at the POS and manage risk to meet your business goals. With SCAN OnLine, you can design sophisticated risk management strategies to meet changing business goals. SCAN OnLine is an online, real-time solution that supports electronic switching of POS check transactions for decisioning and authorization.
SCAN OnLine is supported by our analytics team, which regularly monitors the effectiveness of the variables used to make a check acceptance decision and recommends changes that will improve performance in line with your goals. This eliminates the need for you to staff internally for this role plus it provides you with expertise that would be difficult to otherwise hire and maintain.
You have the option to switch out all of your checks or identify a subset of transactions and switch out only those transactions to SCAN OnLine. Once a transaction is received, SCAN OnLine performs a series of actions that result in one of three broad responses: Accept, Decline or Refer to Manager. The average response time for SCAN OnLine authorizations is less than one second.
The Scored Negative file allows you to accept checks from the casual NSF check writer, thus improving your customer service and check sales.
By scoring the negative file, we assign a risk score to accounts that only have NSF items outstanding. You choose the risk level you are comfortable with, and we filter out the negative file accounts that are below that risk threshold. This results in the casual NSF check writer being accepted rather than declined. This solution is available for both SCAN and SCAN OnLine customers.
There are two type of negative information that is scored - an account number and a driver's license (DL) number. In order for an account or DL number to be eligible for scoring, all checks attached to that ID must be NSF and fewer than 60 days old (based on the date of contribution to SCAN). The account number scoring is triggered by any event that occurs against that account, such as:
